When I started writing about USB to SPDIF converters around two years ago, I faced a lot of skepticism over at head-fi. Some of the usual complaints were rather similar to the following: How is it possible that two bit perfect transports can sound any different from one another? How is it possible that gigabytes of data can be transported over USB cabl...Read Full Post »

The Aktyna A.R.I.S. Evo2 are high performance decoupling feet for audio (and video) equipment that transform the vibration generated by the equipment itself and by the outside environment into heat.
Throughout the past three years I have experimented with different coupling and decoupling feet and platforms. While most of them did change the sound of my system, very few did it withou...Read Full Post »

I posted a few months ago a review about Deep Sounds Cables, which are the work of Stuart (aka Deep Sounds). I posted the review here: http:/www.tweak-fi.com/apps/blog/show/5030346-review-deep-sounds-cables-silver-surfers
Since then, Stuart improved upon the cables he sent me and he sent samples to 2 members of Tweak-fi (Kboe and rosgr63). I thought it would be intere...

These past 2 years, we have seen an increasing number of USB to SPDIF devices hit the market. While the first devices were seriously limited in both connectivity and raw performance, they were mainly intended to provide a means to connect our computers to external DACs. The newest generation of usb to spdif converters raised the performance bar, and some USB converters can now sonical...Read Full Post »

Reviewing the ALO recabled Beyerdynamic Tesla 1 posed a challenge: how to evaluate a component that is perhaps more transparent than the rest of the chain that it is being associated to? How to make sure that what I am describing is a sonic characteristic of the headphone and not that of the chain preceding it?
During the past few months, I had to reassess my judgement on the Beyer T1s a few times. While I liked the ALO B...Read Full Post »

How much can a digital filter affect the sound of the DAC? Up until last year, I was unaware of the importance (and even the role) of the digital filter in the sonic outcome of a DAC. It was until I used the DAC19MK3 and got to compare side by side the HDCD capable PMD100 against the DF1704 that I started to understand the importance of the digital filter. I found that both thePMD100 and DF1704 had strengths and weaknesses which led me to replace the da...Read Full Post »

The idea of writing this article came to me while I was trying to find the right words to explain to head-fier how I felt about the differences between the stock BeyerT1 and the ALO recabled Beyer T1. Since I described the ALO as being smoother sounding than the stock cable, he deduced that the ALO cable was acting as some sort low pass filter. While it is quite explicable, it is far from what I heard. This simple exchange highlighted two things to me: Written communication is obviously trick...Read Full Post »

Before getting into the second part of this review, I wanted to take a moment to describe the effect of a small “tweak” that can applied to many USB converters, the USB2ISO or ADUM isolator.
What this little dongle does is that it provides galvanic isolation between the computer and whatever converter is connected through USB.
USB2ISO isolator (galvanic USB isolation):
Many USB converters have some sort of tr...Read Full Post »
