I had initially written the article below as part of headphone cable review, but I thought it could be more helpful by being presented as a separate article since it is in no way related to a specific brand of cables or equipment.
I have to say that I have always been puzzled to see on head-fi people spend thousands of dollars on headphone amps and tubes while dismissing the possibility that a “simple” piece of wire could make any sort of difference at all. ...Read Full Post »

I was contacted by Stuart (who had read some of my reviews) a few months ago in order to ask me if I were interested to write a review for his cables. After a few e-mail exchanges I came to understand that Stuart had a longstanding experience in the hi-fi world and in experimenting with different cables.
It took me a little more than expected to finish this particular review, not because there was a la...Read Full Post »

About 2 months ago, Alister from Artisan Silver Cables contacted me tosee if I were interested in reviewing their new headphone upgrade cables forthe Sennheiser HD-600 and HD-650. I accepted his proposition with greatpleasure as I was curious to see how the Mark 2 cable compared to the Mark 1that I had been using for the past few months.
The Mark 1 Silver Dream cable replaced the Moon Audio Blue Dragon I hadused for ...Read Full Post »

A few months ago I started a thread (the usb to spdif shoot review) where I compared 4 usb to spdif converters. Up until recently, I had tried in my system 6 different usb converters and the stock M2tech Hiface was still my favourite.
A few weeks ago, jkeny told us about the mods he performed on the Hiface. He offered to send me for review his modded Hiface which I gladly accepted. So after listening...Read Full Post »

For those wondering what ACSS means it is the acronym for Audio-gd Current Signal System which is similar to Krell’s CAST system.
What it means that when you connect your whole chain in ACSS, there are 2 interesting things:
1. The signal is being transmitted in the current domain, which minimizes the effect of the cables on the transmission.
2. The whole system acts as one single gai...Read Full Post »

I was asked by a fellow head-fier (on behalf of Purepiper) if I were interested in reviewing a DAC from a Chinese company I have never heard of before.
After accepting, Purepiper sent me pretty quickly their DAC A-1 and I received it about 2 weeks ago.
Packaging and Build Quality:
The...Read Full Post »

The Sennheiser HD650:
I have owned the Sennheiser HD-650 for more than 3 years now and since the time I got them, I have been amazed about their sound quality and the way they scale with better gear.
In my opinion, the biggest weakness of these headphones is their relatively low price. When a non-audiophile buys the Sennheiser hd-650, they probably donR...Read Full Post »

Jitter in cables:
The idea of digital cables sounding different from one another will probably shock many people. According to some, “Bits are bits”and either the digital data is perfectly transmitted or there are drops and glitches but there shouldn’t be any “in-between”.
But the reality is different. There are no 1 and 0s running around in a digital cable. Actually, the signal b...Read Full Post »

I - Preamble:
The Audio-GD FUN is the replacement of the Compass which has been extensivelydescribed here by Currawong on head-fi.org, so I won't go into the details.
Like the Compass, it is a DAC / pre-amp / headphone amp in one enclosure. Butthe novelty here is that has a modular design that lets even the unskilled userto replace different modules to tailor the sound of the FUN accordingly.

I have been using the PowerTransPlus power cords in my system for a few months, and thought I would shoot a few words about its performance:
Concept and Build Quality:
While the PowertransPlus can seem to be overly expensive for most people, its price doesn't even start to compare with some esoteric audiophile power cords out there.
Instead of falling into the pointless wa...Read Full Post »
